Welcome to the Auxiliary Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York (“APBA”). We were created in January 1965 to address the concerns and needs of our membership, the Auxiliary Police Officers and Supervisors of the New York City Police Department. Our goal is that we would recognize the problems faced by our members, and address them by collaborating with the ranking officers of the NYPD to address the needs and concerns of our membership. Ultimately the best way to do this is to educate our members and the Public on our role in providing our volunteer services to the City of New York.
The supervisory body of the APBA is the Executive Board, which oversees the daily activities of the Union and provides leadership to our members.
John W. Hyland has been providing leadership to the APBA since 1965 when it was founded. John was educated at St. John’s Elementary School, Kingsbridge and graduated from Samuel Gompers Vocational and Technical High School in the Bronx. He is president of the Samuel Gompers Alumni Association and serves on its Advisory Board. John attended Smith and Wesson Academy for Law Enforcement and Defensive Tactics Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
John is a retired NYPD Auxiliary Police Sergeant and he has received numerous awards, letters of personal recognition, and commendations, including the Award of Valor, the highest honor an NYPD Auxiliary Police Officer can receive. John was employed with Verizon Communications for 33 years and is still a proud member of Local 1101 Communication Workers of America.
John is an active Hibernian, and served in every elected office in the Daniel J. Quilty Division 7 in Bronx County. John was a member of the St. John’s Parish, Kingsbridge for over 50 years and is now an active member of St. Lawrence O’Toole Parish in Brewster.
